A safety camera van caught both offences on Willington Street in Maidstone in August last year. Oliver Scrivener of Wykeham Grove, Maidstone, was found guilty of both offences in court this month and received the licence points as well as a £175 fine for the phone offence and £350 fine for the speeding offence. (42mph in a 30mph limit).

Katherine Barret, Communications Officer for the Kent & Medway Safety Camera Partnership said: "The laser cameras and DVD system used in the safety camera vans are able to detect people speeding, using a mobile phone and drivers not wearing seat belts - all at the same time. These are three of the four main factors involved in crashes that result in serious injury or death and by publicising cases like this we hope it will raise awareness that you will get caught and that it acts as a deterrent to other drivers."

There is a fixed camera in Willington Street and the camera vans also enforce within the signed area. The fixed camera was installed in 2004 because four people were killed or seriously injured within a 1.5km stretch of the road. The aim of the camera, as with all cameras in the county, is to reduce casualties by reducing the number of offences committed.
